The Center for American Principles joined a coalition of 43 organizations urging Congress to adopt a temporary federal preemption of certain state-level artificial intelligence laws while a comprehensive national AI framework is developed.
In this letter, the coalition argues that a limited period of federal preemption is necessary to prevent a fragmented patchwork of state AI regulations that could undermine national security, economic competitiveness, innovation, and consumer affordability. The letter emphasizes that inconsistent state laws increase compliance costs, disproportionately harm startups and small businesses, and risk allowing individual states to impose de facto national standards on a technology that operates across state lines. While strongly supporting responsible AI governance, the coalition stresses that temporary preemption would provide regulatory clarity and stability, allowing Congress time to craft a balanced, durable federal framework while existing laws and agencies continue to apply, ensuring the United States remains a global leader in artificial intelligence.
